Do I need to put fire bricks in my manufatured fireplace?

We just moved into a home that the previous owner built himself. He did alot of great work, but on the fireplace he bought a Marco fireplace and then filled it in with mortared together firebricks. This took out more than two inches on three sides and then add a homemade welded fireback as well. Is all this extra stuff necessary?
