Yes, but I think the dynamics of an online friendship are different that a face-to-face one. We really don't "know" the people we speak to online and don't have the opportunity to learn different parts of their personalities in different settings. I think many people use the internet to keep in "close" contact with people they wouldn't otherwise be able to do so.
